Hello, my name is Josh Dutson for those of you who do not know me. I am currently studying Communication at Southern Utah University and my emphasis is Strategic Communication. This is a blend of Advertising Studies and Public Relations Studies.
I started this blog specifically because I am aware of the dependency the global market now has on social media and I felt that I needed to learn as much as I can about these things while I am in school.
Since starting this blog I have grown quite fond of sharing my ideas on here. it has really become a part of my life. I have never been able to keep a diary or journal. Not that I really tried very hard before. So, in a way, this is my version of a journal.
These new pages are what I intend to use to branch out slightly from the normal postings of things that I have been putting on the home page. In here I intend to express things a little more related to me and less related to Strategic Communication.
Anyways, about me...well, I am an avid reader. This month I have read 4 books and am working on two right at the moment. The four I read were all from the free books on the iBookstore app and included The Art of War by Sun Tsu the old Chinese novel, and The Iliad and The Odyssey by Homer. Right now I am working on The Gathering Storm by Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson, and The Fall of Advertising, the Rise of PR by Al Ries and Laura Ries. I'm really enjoying the educational value of the PR book. The author is very focused on expressing that PR is the stronger form of communication in todays world while at the same time allowing advertising to hold on because it does play an important role in marketing.
Along with reading I am a very big fan of several television shows. Specifically How I Met Your Mother. This is one of the greatest shows of all time, and thanks to the character Barney played by Neil Patrick Harris I have earned the nickname Barney on several occasions. This is because when I am clean shaven many people think I look 'almost' just like NPH. I attribute this mostly to the fact that, on occasion I wear fancy suits just like Barney, and I have been known to have a fairly decent handle on the art of picking up women. I have got very similar hair to Barney's also that I think plays into the who thing as well.
Something that most people do not know about me is that I am actually a very skilled Machinist, Welder, and Custom Cabinetmaker. These are certainly not skills that I have kept up due to the fact that they require much time and money, but at one point in time I was considered very good and I have contributed to many professional custom projects in the past.
I love art. My favorite painter Claude Monet is to thank for that. Until last year I had never done any kind of art other than the afore mentioned Cabinetmaking which is a completely different type of art. Yet, when I was young I used to love flipping through the pages of the art books in the local library, and reading about the life of Monet and other artists like him. Of course at that time it was always a hidden interest. In my home art was definitely not a possibility. Then last year I had the opportunity to begin taking classes on art. I had the experience of traveling around the world and learning how to take decent photographs from some professional photographers, and I was finally able to learn how to draw, paint and design. Since then art has become a very important part of my life.
Well that is about all for now. I may add more later if I am feeling up to it but at this time I am done.
